Gym Cleanliness and Hygiene Checklist for Owners and Managers

Cleanliness is one of the first things members notice and one of the most common reasons they leave quietly. A clean gym feels safe, professional and worth the membership fee.

Daily Checklist

  • Wipe handles, benches, mats and machine seats
  • Clean dumbbells and plates that are used most
  • Mop floors in high-traffic areas
  • Clean and restock washrooms several times a day
  • Empty dustbins
  • Check that cleaning sprays and paper towels are available at stations
  • Put equipment back in place at closing time

Weekly Checklist

  • Deep clean cardio machine screens and consoles
  • Clean mirrors and windows
  • Wash mats and upholstery
  • Clean air-conditioner filters and fans
  • Check lockers and changing rooms thoroughly

Monthly Checklist

  • Inspect equipment for wear, loose bolts and torn upholstery
  • Service cardio machines as per manufacturer guidance
  • Deep clean floors and corners
  • Review pest control

Air and Ventilation

Good airflow keeps the gym fresh. Keep windows or exhaust fans working, service AC units regularly, and avoid strong artificial fragrances that bother members.

Encourage Member Hygiene

  • Ask members to carry a towel
  • Place sanitiser and wipes near equipment
  • Display simple, polite signs: "Please wipe after use"
  • Ask members to re-rack weights

Make Someone Responsible

Assign tasks to specific staff for each shift and use a simple sign-off sheet. What gets checked gets done.

Why It Matters for Business

  • Better reviews and word-of-mouth
  • Higher renewal rates
  • Longer equipment life
  • Fewer health and safety complaints

Washroom and Changing Room Standards

  • Check and clean every two to three hours during busy times
  • Keep soap, tissue and hand towels stocked
  • Fix leaks and bad smells quickly
  • Keep floors dry to prevent slips

Equipment Safety Checks

Cleanliness and safety go together. Check cables, pulleys, benches and treadmill belts regularly. Place an "Out of order" sign on damaged equipment immediately and repair it quickly.

Create a Simple Cleaning Log

A sheet near the reception with time slots, area names and staff initials keeps everyone accountable. Members also notice the log and appreciate the effort.

Frequently Asked Questions
